“Follow the desire lines” - Soundwalk in Marzahn, Berlin (DE)
This soundwalk focuses on the concept of “desire lines”, a topic that comes from the field of architecture, which are defined as “the grassy or muddy path inscribed in space where people have created their own route outside of those prescribed by abstract place makers”.
The path you will follow take place in the suburban area of Marzahn, in the East Berlin Area.
Since I moved in this area, in July 2025, I noticed how many uncommon paths were present in the neighborhood, so I started to explore the area and took pictures of these numerous shortcuts which defined the people’s paths during their walk around the neighborhood.
My soundwalk project explores the desire lines of Marzahn through the act of listening. By following these informal paths, participants are invited to experience them not merely as shortcuts but as meaningful traces of resistance, identity, and collective practice. Positioned at the intersection of sound art, urban theory, and psychogeography, the project aims to offer new perspectives on how urban space is lived, perceived, and transformed through everyday actions.
The whole project has been supervised by Dr. Elen Flügge
